Good sleep is just around the corner...!

Did you know that sleep is considered more important than good nutrition and exercise by many sleep scientists? Yet, we don't seem to give it the attention, emphasis and time it deserves. It's all too easy to go about our busy lives accepting that we are depriving ourselves of the thing our bodies need more than anything else: a good 8 hour sleep every night. Science has now shown, less than 8 hours sleep is linked to...

  1. Poor immune function - One study found that those who slept less than 7 hours were almost 3 times more likely to develop a cold than those who slept 8 hours or more.

  2. Poor mental health - It’s been estimated that 90% of people with depression complain about sleep quality.

  3. High inflammation in the body - increasing your risk and recurrence of inflammatory bowel diseases.

  4. Poor exercise performance - reducing strength, speed, accuracy and reaction times.

  5. Greater risk of heart disease and stroke.

  6. Poor concentration and productivity - affecting our problem-solving ability, cognition and memory. Another study found that short sleep can negatively impact some aspects of brain function to a similar degree as alcohol intoxication.

  7. Weight gain - People with short sleep duration tend to weigh significantly more than those who get adequate sleep. This is also because you tend to eat more calories when sleep deprived: Sleep deprivation affects hormones that regulate appetite as well as affecting glucose metabolism and reducing insulin sensitivity which increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.

So in short, if you want to feel strong, healthy, balanced and happy both mentally and physically, the best thing you can do is focus on getting your 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night.
